A biological weapon gone awry is only the start of problems in the little town of Evan’s City, Pennsylvania. Bouts of insanity in the populace are leading to murder and rioting, until the US Army turns up - and things really start going to hell.

The film takes place within the notoriously rough Brownsville section of Brooklyn and especially within the Van Dyke housing projects in the NYPD’s sixty-fifth precinct. Three policemen struggle with the sometimes fine line between right and wrong.The opening scene shows two men sitting in a parked car having a conversation, the man in the drivers seat, Carlo (Vincent D’Onofrio) is then shot unexpectedly in the face by the passenger (revealed to be Sal) who then robs Carlo and runs off.Detective Salvatore "Sal" Procida (Ethan Hawke), desperate for money to feed and house his rapidly growing family, has started pocketing the money left on the table during drug raids. Deeply religious, he finds that he’s in the bad place of trying to reconcile his misdeeds with his needs. The mold in the walls of his home is making his wife (Lili Taylor) ill and endangering the life of his unborn twins. And the down payment on his coveted new, bigger house is past due.Officer Eddie Dugan (Richard Gere) is a week from retirement after twenty-two years of less-than-exemplary service to the force when he’s assigned to oversee rookies in the tough neighborhoods. His life in shambles, Eddie is barely hanging on, swilling whiskey in the morning to get out of bed. His only friend is the prostitute he frequents.Detective Clarence "Tango" Butler (Don Cheadle) is an undercover cop working the drug beat. But he tires of the kind of attention that a black man in a black car attracts, and he’s been begging for a promotion and a desk job for years. He’s finally offered a way out and it means betraying a close friend Caz, a known criminal (Wesley Snipes) recently released from federal prison.Federal Agent Smith (Ellen Barkin) instructs Tango to set-up the drug deal that will assure Caz’s arrest and return to federal prison. Eddie’s first rookie assignment (Logan Marshall-Green) gets himself killed on his second day on the force when he requests to be assigned to work with another officer. Sal’s wife goes into the hospital after an asthma attack brought on by the mold in their home. Eddie’s second rookie assignment (Jesse Williams) accidentally shoots a petty drug-dealer leaving the young man deaf and the NYPD facing a public relations nightmare.When Tango goes to warn Caz to abort their upcoming drug deal, they are ambushed and Caz is shot dead on the street, under orders from Red (Michael K. Williams), a gangster Caz had humiliated earlier in a rooftop incident. Eddie turns in his badge and visits his regular hooker, Chantal (Shannon Kane), who does not want to change her life by moving with him to Connecticut. After Agent Smith remarks that Caz’s death is better than his arrest, Tango lunges at her, but is restrained by fellow agents. Tango determines to avenge Caz’s death now that he knows Red ordered the hit.That night within the Van Dyke housing projects, Eddie, Tango, and Sal converge for very different reasons. After leaving his friend and partner, Detective Ronny Rosario (Brian F. O’Byrne), Sal, alone, raids the apartment of a drug informant. After killing many of the informant’s entourage and finding their stockpile of cash, Sal is shot from behind and killed by the lone remaining gangster. Meanwhile, Eddie, overcoming the urge to commit suicide, rescues a missing person (Sarah Thompson) from a basement operated sex-slave dungeon. Tango gets his vengeance from Red, but then is mistaken for a gangster and is shot dead in the street by Rosario. Only after shooting and killing Tango does Rosario realize he’s shot another law officer. Rosario, still determined to stop Sal, is forced to continue his search for him, yet is further devastated when he finds the body of Sal within the building.The closing scene shows Eddie having rescued the missing person, and an assortment of other women, and in the process having redeemed himself from the reputation he earned within the precinct of being a failure as an officer.

At the top of the Empire State Building, Poseidon (Kevin McKidd) meets with Zeus (Sean Bean), who comments that the storm clouds have no lightning and that his master bolt has been stolen. He blames Poseidon’s son for the theft. Despite Poseidon’s claims of his son’s innocence, Zeus gives Poseidon 14 days to return it, lest war break out.

During a field trip to an exhibition of Greek and Roman art, teenager Percy Jackson (Logan Lerman), is lured away from the crowd by a Fury disguised as his substitute English teacher, who then attacks him, questioning him about the lightning bolt. The incredulous Percy, who has no knowledge of this, is rescued by his Latin teacher, Mr. Brunner (Pierce Brosnan). After dispatching the Fury, Brunner gives Percy a magical pen. On Brunner’s instruction, Percy’s best friend, Grover (Brandon T. Jackson), takes Percy to a training camp for demigods, Camp Half-Blood, along with Percy’s mother, Sally Jackson (Catherine Keener). During their trip to the camp, Percy attempts to learn about his biological father from Sally, but they are attacked by a Minotaur. Although Percy and Grover, who is revealed to be a satyr, make it to the camp, its defenses prohibit entrance to Sally, who is captured by the Minotaur, and disappears before Percy. Percy engages the Minotaur with the magical pen, which turns into a sword named Riptide, eventually killing the creature with one of its horns.

In touring Camp Half-Blood, Percy learns that Brunner is the mythological centaur Chiron, and the camp’s trainer, and that his father is the god Poseidon. He also meets Luke Castellan (Jake Abel), the son of Hermes, and Annabeth Chase (Alexandra Daddario), the demigod daughter of Athena. While at the camp, Percy learns that water has the power to heal his injuries, and allows him to manifest his magical abilities.

Hades later appears and reveals that Sally Jackson is his prisoner, and proposes she be traded for the master bolt. Chiron instructs Percy not to bargain with the demon, but to go to Olympus to convince Zeus of his innocence. Percy sneaks away from the camp to travel to the Underworld, along with Grover and Annabeth, who secure for him from Luke a portable shield, flying shoes and a map to Persephone’s (Rosario Dawson) pearls, one of which will reveal the exit from the Underworld when retrieved.

At Aunty Em’s Garden Emporium, the trio are attacked by Medusa (Uma Thurman), but manage to decapitate her, and take the pearl from her bracelet. They also take her head, which they later successfully use against a hydra that attacks them during their acquisition of another pearl from the crown of a giant statue of Athena at the Parthenon replica in Nashville, Tennessee. They acquire the third and final pearl from a roulette wheel at a hotel casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, in part with help from Poseidon, who aids them against Lotus Eaters. The map reveals an entrance to the Underworld in Hollywood, California, beneath the Hollywood Sign.

The trio enter the Underworld, where, after traveling across the River Styx, they encounter Persephone, who takes them to Hades. Percy attempts to explain to Hades that he is not the lightning thief. During an ensuing melee, Percy drops his shield, whose handle conceals the missing master bolt, which Hades takes. However, the trio manage to reacquire it before escaping the Underworld with the rescued Sally. They are transported to the top of the Empire State Building, which they learn is the location to the entrance to Olympus. They are confronted by Luke, who reveals himself to have been the real lightning thief. Expressing his desire for a new generation of rulers to take over Olympus, he explains that he had hoped that the trio would not have escaped the Underworld alive, and after stealing the bolt from Percy, the two engage in battle. After using his water powers to dispatch Luke, Percy arrives in Olympus, where he presents the retrieved bolt, and reveals the truth about Luke. Poseidon explains to Percy the reason why they could not know each other during Percy’s childhood, but expresses his love for his son. Percy returns to Camp Half-Blood, where he resumes his training. After the end credits, a scene shows Sally forcing Gabe out of their apartment and he reads a note on the fridge from Percy telling not to open the fridge. Gabe destroys the lock on the refrigerator and as he opens it, Medusa stares right back at him.It’s the 21st century, but the gods of Mount Olympus and assorted monsters have walked out of the pages of high school student Percy Jackson’s Greek mythology texts and into his life. And they’re not happy: Zeus’ lightning bolt has been stolen, and Percy is the prime suspect. Even more troubling is the sudden disappearance of Percy’s mother. As Percy finds himself caught between angry and battling gods, he and his friends embark on a cross-country adventure to catch the true lightning thief, save Percy’s mom, and unravel a mystery more powerful than the gods themselves.

When Paul hurts his shoulder shooting cans for fun, he is taken to the only doctor in town, whose number the murderer intercepts.Paul and Meryl go on a "date" in town and begin to reconcile, but then Paul is alienated when he learns that Meryl had had an affair while they were separated.The next day, with the killer in town, the Morgans anticipate leaving Ray for a permanent hiding place. The Wheelers invite them to a rodeo, but the Morgans are quarreling so they decline. Leaving the Morgans without any form of security, the Wheelers leave for the rodeo. The killer attacks the house, but the Morgans are able to sneak out.Fleeing to the rodeo, they hide in a bull suit and accidentally frighten a live bull into head-butting them. Meryl, unable to walk, stays hidden from the killer while Paul confronts him unarmed. But he is rescued by Mr. and Mrs. Wheeler and his new friends from the town.In a coda, set 6 months later, Paul and Meryl are still married having just adopted a baby girl from China, whom they name Rae after Ray, Wyoming, and Meryl is pregnant with a child of their own.

Caroline attempts to suicide bomb the summit while the last remaining terrorist tries to attack the US Motorcade with a car that has a bomb. Wax takes out the terrorist with a rocket launcher before he can do any damage and James confronts Caroline at the summit. He tries to convince her to stop and is apparently successful at first, but when Caroline reaches to trigger her bomb, James has no choice but to shoot her dead. Wax disarms the bomb and the threat is over. Later, James, now an official agent, escorts Wax to his plane and Wax offers for James to be his full-time partner. The two play a game of chess and James reveals he now has a larger gun than Wax, indicating he is more like Wax now than how he originally was.

Late one night, Afro is suddenly attacked by Jinno. However, he is unable to protect himself, and Jinno drags him nearby to his father's grave, where a woman named Sio awaits. She proceeds to take the Number One headband that he possesses, as well as the remains of his dead father's skull. Before leaving, she tells him to seek and obtain the Number Two headband, if he wants the right to take back his father's remains. With that, Afro must once again embark on a path of violence in order to let his father rest in peace once again.

Bad Blake (Jeff Bridges) is a 57 year-old alcoholic singer/songwriter who was once a star of country music. He now earns a modest living by singing and playing his guitar at one-night stands, in small town bars, in the southwestern United States. Having a history of failed marriages, Bad is without a family. He is mostly on the road performing, staying in cheap motels and travelling in his old car alone.Enter Jean Craddock (Maggie Gyllenhaal), a young journalist after a story, divorced and with a 4 year old son Buddy (Jack Nation). She interviews Bad and begins to see the man behind the musician and they are attracted to each other. Jean and her son become a catalyst for Bad getting his life back on track. In doing so, he begins to renew a professional relationship with Tommy Sweet (Colin Farrell), a popular and successful country music star he once mentored, and plays as the opening act at one of Tommy’s concerts. But Bad’s relationship with Jean doesn’t last. Bad almost loses her son at a shopping mall while drinking at a bar, and Jean breaks up with him.After losing Jean and her son, who were becoming his only family, Bad seeks help from Alcoholics Anonymous and gets sober. He writes a song that he thinks is his best ever, "The Weary Kind," and sells it to Tommy, and mentions this while fishing with Wayne (Robert Duvall), his old friend.Sixteen months later, for the first time since their breakup, Bad encounters Jean when she comes up to him in a parking lot outside one of Tommy’s concerts. Bad had just finished playing as an opening act for Tommy and has just seen his protege play "The Weary Kind" to an appreciative audience while his manager presents another of the large royalty checks for the song. Jean is engaged and they meet as friends who still care about each other, which includes gestures like Bad insisting Buddy have the money of that royalty check for his 18th birthday. The film ends with Jean interviewing Bad for a story, at a picnic table on the edge of the parking lot, where there is a scenic overlook of a southwestern US landscape, and the sound of Tommy’s music from the nearby concert.

When ex-con Isaiah Bone (Jai White) gets out of prison, he immediately seeks out a room to rent and gets involved in LA's underground fight scene. Along the way, he destroys the area's best fighter, who is under the control of a local mob boss named James (Eammon Walker). When Bone refuses the mob boss's request to fight on the international circuit, it sets off a powerful battle between the two, amidst some surprising revelations about what drove Bone to get involved with James in the first place.
